The outcome of the petition was that Woking Borough Council cut down the two trees on Monday 22/02/2021 without any prior notice other than a press notice released on the same morning as the operatives proceeded to cut down the trees. There were banners on the trees and posters nearby prompting passers by to sign the petition.
My thanks go to everyone who took the time to sign the petition and to Woking Extinction Rebellion for their support in drawing attention to the situation, including their climate crime scene investigation (more information on Woking Live) afterwards.
The trees with an estimated age of 100 to 120 years were destroyed as part of council plans to widen Guildford Road by the Sovereign’s Public House; this widening will increase traffic and air pollution in the town centre.
