COP30 took place in Belém, Brazil, ten years after the Paris Agreement, with high expectations for stronger global action on climate change. While the location enabled vital participation from Indigenous communities, the summit fell short of delivering the decisive steps needed. Major polluters were absent, and the final agreement included no clear plan to phase out fossil fuels or end deforestation, despite record global temperatures.
Some progress was made, including a new just transition mechanism to support developing countries and the launch of a major fund for tropical forest protection. Although imperfect, COP30 kept international dialogue moving — underlining both the urgency of action and the need for stronger global leadership.
